The Fate of North Korean Defectors: What Happens After Unification
"The Fate of North Korean Defectors: What Happens After Unification?" by Sekilah Calvin
North Korea is one of the most isolated countries in the world and home to over 24 million people. That number is swiftly decreasing with the amount of people escaping the country via China. Most North Korean defectors escape to South Korea, though some decide to go to the U.S. and to Japan. In general about 1,200 North Koreans defect to South Korea yearly with the number of defectors continuing to grow. As of now nearly 40,000 North Koreans live in South Korea's capital, Seoul.
The Evolution of the Chinese Concubine
"The Evolution of the Chinese Concubine" by Sekilah Calvin
“Xiaosan, Ernai, Xiaomi,” these are terms to describe the other woman in modern day China. From the Qing Dynasty concubines to what we now call mistresses, having another woman has always been part of Chinese culture. The role of "the other woman" has been adapted throughout Chinese history due to the changes in law and social thinking. This paper will loosely explore how these revisions in law and social modernity has created a new lifestyle for mistresses in mostly Hong Kong and rural China.
